Why Bilbao?

Steel production is in this region’s DNA, which, thanks to its tradition and experience, is home to 50% of the steelworks on the Cantabrian coast, which are the main driving forces in the value chain of the iron and steel sector.

This all forms part of a solid transformation industry that extends throughout the Basque Country, representing an important aspect of its economic structure. Furthermore, its manufacturing and productive diversity – mainly stainless steel, special steels and long products – are highly valued on the international market.

There are around one hundred companies and 11 steel production plants, representing the sector’s entire value chain in the Basque Autonomous Community, placing the Basque Country in 12th position in the European ranking with a production capacity of 39% of the Spanish total.

As far as demand for iron and steel products, the Basque Autonomous Community has a large industrial structure of companies in strategic sectors, such as: automotive, energy, naval, railway, machine-tool, petrochemical, capital goods, construction and electrical appliances, among others.
